Son of MLB Player Innocent of Texas Sexual Assault, Lawyer Declares: May 17, 2012

The 17-year-old son of a Major League outfielder was arrested Monday on allegations of sexual assault — allegations his attorney has categorically denied. The young man was freed on bond from a Collin County jail later the same day.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the prosecutor in the case contends the alleged assault occurred after a group of boys invited various girls to a party, drugged them and then had sex.

The 17-year-old's attorney, Todd Shapiro, said in a statement, "We were stunned by these accusations, disappointed by the way it was handled, but completely confident that the facts will prove [the accused] is innocent. He, as well as his family, looks forward to the opportunity to clear his name at the appropriate time."

The young man is a standout athlete at his high school and is currently being recruited by several college athletic programs. Moreover, "He's a very good student," said Shapiro in a statement reported by KENS5. "He's got a lot going for him; he still does have a lot going for him, and he will have a lot going for him. It's just, as you can imagine, if you're a parent, very upsetting when your kid gets arrested."

The young man's father has reportedly taken a sabbatical from his MLB career for a "personal matter" — presumably to be with his son and family during this especially trying time.
