Request made for former NBA star to pay child support up front

Former NBA star Allen Iverson has been in the news quite a bit as of late in relation to child support. He and his ex-wife had been involved in a child support dispute in which his ex-wife accused him of missing child support payments. This dispute was resolved when Iverson paid $40,000 in back child support.

The child support saga of the former couple recently took an interesting turn. Most of the time, child support payments involve parents making payments on a monthly basis. Apparently, Iverson's ex-wife is not terribly confident that Iverson will continue to make his monthly payments, as she has made a request to a court that the pay-by-month system be abandoned in the case of Iverson and that Iverson be required to pay the entirety of his future child support for the former couple's five children up front.

This upfront payment would cover 13 years of future child support payments and would amount to over $1 million. Thus, this is a fairly significant request.

One wonders what will happen in this child support matter as it progresses and what the court in this case will ultimately decide in relation to this request.

Child support is one of the major issues that can arise between divorced or separated parents. As this matter illustrates, parents sometimes make child support-related requests to a court. These requests can involve a wide variety of issues and can involve many different forms of requested relief.

Child support matters can be incredibly complicated and what resolutions are ultimately reached in such matters can have significant effects on the parties involved. Thus, if a person is thinking of making a child support-related request to a court, he or she may wish to consider speaking to an experienced family law attorney.
