As unfortunate as it may be, many people go through the divorce process every year. Some are able to put their relationship in the past without much stress, but others find that there are details that make this extremely challenging.

If you have at least one child with your soon to be ex-spouse, you can be rest assured that matters of custody and support will come to the forefront at some point. For this reason, you need to make plans in advance.

However, before you start negotiations with your spouse, you need to do something else: Discuss the divorce with your child. You may soon find that this is more difficult than anything you face in court.

Here are some steps you can take to successfully discuss divorce with your child:

  • Think carefully about what you’ll say. Since you want to take the right approach and because this conversation can be so unpredictable, you should write down the key information you want to convey and practice saying it.
  • Schedule a time. Depending on the circumstances, you may want to sit down with the other parent to discuss the divorce with your child. Schedule a time that makes sense. For example, do this during a quiet period in the evening. Don’t do this at dinner or while you’re taking your child to school.
  • Be ready to answer questions. You may be surprised to find that your child has many questions about the divorce, including how it will change their life. You should be ready for anything that comes your way. Furthermore, you should never lie to your child. It’s best to be open and honest.
  • Explain that it’s not their fault. Many children will believe they were the cause of the divorce. You want to make it clear upfront that this is not the case.

As you can see, there is a lot to think about as you plan to discuss divorce with your child.

Once you do this, you will feel better about what the future will bring. At that point, you can consult with your family law attorney to better understand the divorce process and how to handle every detail that comes your way. When you plan for everything, you’re able to take on anything.
