Your children mean everything to you, and you want to make sure you get your fair share of parenting time. While you have a solid case already, you want to do everything you can to make sure the court sees you as a responsible and likable parent.

There are some things you can to do present yourself in court that will help guarantee that you’re looked on positively. For example, coming on time is vital to your success and showing that you’re responsible. Here are a few other tips for making the best impression in court.

Always look clean and presentable

Parents should always come to court looking their best. That doesn’t necessarily mean wearing a suit, but it does mean making sure to do your hair and to appear clean and professional. If you’re not sure what to wear, talk to your attorney before your hearing. The last thing you want to do is to make a bad impression on the judge.

Be on time

Another thing to keep in mind is that you should be on time for court. Keeping a judge waiting does nothing to help your case. Be on time and prepared, so you can address the case at the time and date set by the courts. If you are running late, call your attorney to tell him or her when you think you may arrive.

Be polite and respect others

Finally, act and speak in a respectful manner. If you constantly interrupt the judge, fidget during the hearing or frown when your spouse or ex is speaking, it could put you in a disadvantageous position. This does nothing to make you seem like a good parental figure, and it could hurt your ability to achieve your goal.

Your attorney may have previous experience dealing with the judge assigned to your case. Listen to what your attorney says about this judge and act accordingly.
