Dallas mayor plans rally to increase domestic violence awareness

On Behalf of The Shapiro Law Firm | Feb 13, 2013 | Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is not just an issue that affects individuals and their family members. Rather, as any Dallas family violence attorney knows, it is something that can become an issue for entire communities.

As previously mentioned on this blog, the Dallas community is taking steps to inform the public about domestic violence and influence community members to help reduce the prevalence of domestic violence in the city by taking steps within schools. The hope is that the effort will help individuals understand what they can do to respond to this serious family law issue.

Now, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings is stepping up this effort, with the help of local celebrities: Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman, former Dallas Cowboys players; Dale Hansen, local sports anchor; and Bishop T.D. Jakes. The mayor plans to formally announce a rally designed to reach out to both men and women. The mayor hopes that the rally will bring 10,000 men together from Dallas and its suburbs and from organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Big Brothers.

In Dallas, deaths associated with domestic abuse have increased significantly between 2011 and 2012. Understanding what constitutes domestic violence is one of the keys to reducing the prevalence of it in the community. In some cases, victims may not realize that they can seek protection against the way they’re being treated, and thus do not know that they can seek help. The term domestic violence encompasses many forms of abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse. Victims are not only spouses, but can involve any family member.

Though state laws vary, many states provide ways for victims to get emergency protective orders against their abuser. The Dallas rally provides a valuable opportunity for the community to become more aware of domestic violence and family abuse, but it is still important for those involved in domestic abuse to seek help and take steps to prevent future instances of violence.
