There are few things in life, if any, that parents care about more than their children. Thus, it is of little surprise that issues regarding the kids are generally a major concern for parents when getting divorced. Among the arrangements regarding the kids that generally need to be reached in a divorce are arrangements related to where the kids will live, who gets to make decisions regarding the kids and how the financial support of the kids will be handled.
Sometimes, child support and child custody end up becoming huge battlegrounds in a divorce, with major and contentious disputes arising up seemingly all over the place. However, this is not an inevitable situation. Parents sometimes are able to avoid the contentious route and reach child support and child custody arrangements through peaceful settlements. This can be seen in the recent divorce case of actor David Duchovny, of “X-Files” fame, and actress Tea Leoni.
The marriage of Duchovny and Leoni began in 1997. During the course of the marriage, they separated on two occasions, once in 2008 and once in 2011. They have a 15-year-old child and a 12-year-old child.
This June, Duchovny filed for a divorce from Leoni. The divorce has been a quiet one by celebrity standards. According to TMZ, the two have settled the various terms of the divorce, including child custody and child support terms.
Regarding child custody, Leoni will have primary physical custody of the kids and she and Duchovny will share legal custody.
Regarding child support, monthly payments of $8,333 will be made by Duchovny. He will also cover expenses such as the kids’ private school costs, future college costs and summer camp costs.
Whether matters regarding child custody and child support in a divorce be contentious or peaceful, a parent may find the representation of an experienced family law attorney to be very helpful. Such attorneys can provide child custody/support guidance and advice for both major legal battles and amicable negotiations.
